
Waipi'o Valley is also known in Hawaii as the "Valley of the Kings". Waipi'o valley was home to Kamehameha the Great and many other Hawaiian rulers, but nowadays is almost uninhabited because its remote location. The valley itself is one of the most beautiful places on the island: 2000 ft high cliffs line a 1 mile wide and 5 mile deep valley which is fronted by a black sand beach and laced with rainforest and waterfalls.

You can visit Waipi'o valley by yourself, on horseback or with a tour. If you have the chance, use your morning to visit Waipi'o valley. The weather is generally better early, as later in the afternoon the chances on rain increase. Waipi'o valley is only 25 miles from Aaah the views [directions to waipi'o valley on Google Maps]. Follow highway 19 east to Honoka'a, and take a left onto the 240. Follow the 240 for 8 miles until you reach Waipi'o valley. Don't forget to pick up some fresh malassadas (Portuguese sugared and fried balls of fluffy yeast dough) at the Tex Drive Inn in Honoka'a!
