Snorkeling is one of the many joys of the Big Island. There are reefs lining the whole coast and there isn't a beach more than a couple of minutes away from tropical fish in all colors of the rainbow.
If you are planning on going to the beach (and who isn't, you are in Hawaii!), it is a great idea to bring along at least one set of snorkeling gear. You can rent snorkeling equipment all over the Island. Rental prices are between $5 - $10 / day or $25 - $40 / week. You can also buy a complete snorkeling set in the supermarkets for $20 - $30.
If you are looking for fish while snorkeling, keep this in mind: Fish need shelter and food, so the best place to look for them is near coral and the rocks. If you are entering the water somewhere where there are only rocks, be careful not to step on coral or sea urchins. A sandy strip is the best way to get into the water.
The most famous snorkeling spots on the Big Island are on the West coast south of Kona. However, the beaches west of Waimea on the Kohala coast are also very worthwhile (and close to Aaah the Views: 12 miles). Examples of good snorkeling beaches are Waialea bay (directions) and Puako bay (directions).
Behave like a perfect guest in the Hawaiian ocean with the help of this 7 minute video on Hawaiian Reef etiquette. In this video the Humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa (Hawaii's state fish) tells the do's and don'ts of ocean conservation with a Hawaiian dialect.
For personal safety it is important to never turn your back to the ocean (while in the water), and to always be prepared, be careful and to know how to use your equipment. For more safety tips see the lovebigisland guide to snorkeling on Hawaii.
